12 days of Christmas - day 3

It's day 3 of our Christmas giveaway and I'm delighted to welcome American writer Krysten Lindsay Hager.

Christmas in the City
By Krysten Lindsay Hager
When I was a teenager, I had a chance to visit Chicago at Christmastime. I lived in Michigan at the time, so we took a train to get there and the trip just flew by as we planned out what we wanted to do once we got to the city. However, once we got off the train it was like all our plans flew out the window as we took in the city lights. I remember looking out the windows of the taxi and being in awe of all the decorations and lights. After dropping off our bags at the hotel, we hit the Magnificent Mile to see all the shops, decorations, and restaurants.
There’s just something different about the energy of a city and it’s amplified during the holidays. Just walking in the crowds was exciting. We hit all the big stores to see all their holiday displays, got hot chocolate, and picked out Christmas presents for our family and friends. At the time I loved playing with different colors of makeup and we spent time with professional makeup artists at different counters learning new techniques and trying out different colors. I remember a makeup artist suggesting I try this bright colored shimmery copper YSL lipstick that was so different than anything I had ever seen. I was wearing bright silver pants and a gold coat, so it just felt right—obviously I wasn’t a shrinking violet in that outfit. But the outfit, and that lipstick, just reflected how I was feeling that day.
I always wanted to share the magic of that trip, so I decided to use it as inspiration for the opening of my book, Best Friends…Forever?, where my character, Landry, goes to Chicago during the holidays. Landry is fourteen in the book and exploring the city with her parents, while I was nineteen in real life and there with my friend. But despite our age differences, the awe I felt was so universal that I could easily see an eighth grader feeling the way I did—maybe she’d be even more awestruck by the sights and sounds.
When I look back on that trip, I see that while holiday traditions are great, sometimes trying something new and out of your element can really make a holiday feel magical. Last year my husband and I went to the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo for a change and we both were amazed by the breathtaking light displays and decorations. Sure, watching special Christmas movies and doing the traditional stuff you’ve always done is fun, but getting out of your element is a great way to get that holiday magic from your childhood back.
